A Look Inside: The Nathman Home in NE Portland, OR

One of the loveliest people I've met since moving to Portland is someone I've really only gotten to know over the past year, but she's such a warm and easygoing person that it feels like it's been longer. Her name is Tammy and she's as cute as a bug (especially now that she's pregnant!), has the same kind of sick love for the Bachelor/Bachelorette (and okay, Bachelor Pad) as me and is hands-down one of the most hilarious awkward-moment storytellers I've ever met. She has an adorable home with her husband David in Northeast Portland, and on the most recent night she hosted book club, I asked if I could snap some pictures for the blog. She graciously gave me the okay...

My favorite things about Tammy and David's home*? Their no-stone-left-unturned attention to detail and the warmth and coziness created through textures, colors and family photos. And I'm drooling over that rustic wooden cabinet in their dining room! Tammy, where'd you get it? ;)

*Unfortunately the bedroom and basement pictures turned out blurry due to my amateur photography skills - I'll get 'em next time!

San Francisco in Pictures

Okay so San Francisco was totally awesome.

However, this is the first "vacation" in recent memory where I've gotten home and felt like I needed to immediately start the "don't really try this at home, kids" Master Cleanse diet, acknowledge the fact that my last name is not "Moneybags" and limit myself to Netflix blogging for all future entertainment, and spend some time looking up the symptoms and least expensive remedies for mono on WebMD. Wow what a trip. Thank god it's been a workweek with a random day off in the middle (and for me, half-days every other day heehee) or I may not have survived. And yes, I know I didn't even have to deal with a time zone change - I am just that pathetic. (I think I'm just not used to going 5 days without an afternoon nap. Sorry I'm not sorry I like to take a nap every day.)

We walked, ate, drank, cabbed, ate, trollied, photographed, ate, drank, shopped, ate, biked and ate some more. We ate did A Lot. So, the photos below don't even begin to cover our exploration of "the city," but they show some of the highlights that I happened to capture on camera.

Some of my closest college pals - ohhh the memories. We traveled from four different cities to meet up in San Francisco. Cheers to the fact that none of these ladies are snorers! Friends 4 Lyfe! :) :) :)

Chinatown. Classic San Francisco. (And somehow I didn't have a bite of Chinese food the entire trip. Weird and Sad.)

Dolores Park in The Mission District. Love. Just a stroll away from some dang good ice cream and pizza.

The entrance to Tartine (and the end of the line going in to Tartine). I'm a creep, this girl is not my friend.

Another photo from the The Mission. I thought this would turn out to be an interesting shot, so I took it. The giant rainbow flag is pretty awesome.

Clarion Alley. The most amazing collection of street murals I've ever seen.

At Tyler Florence's Wayfare Tavern, where local cuisine of the early 1900s provides inspiration for the oh-my-god-everything-looks-SO-good menu. And from an interior design perspective - I'm not sure if I've ever been to a restaurant with so much of a stepping-into-another-world (maybe I'm being melodramatic) effect. I think it's the closest I'll ever get to eating on the Titanic.

The beautiful Wayfare Tavern kitchen where the best halibut of my life came from; served over creamed kale, topped with corn and truffle cream with a side of corn fritters. Seriously, the best halibut of my life.

Some architecture I thought was cool in the Marina. I'd live there.

Annnd more food. My friend and I actually talked about these beer-steamed mussels from Delarosa for days afterward. The whole meal was fantastic, but damn those were some nice mussels...

Here we are pretending we are Carrie, Charlotte and Samantha having some pastries and lattes at one of our favorite bakeries during the trip, La Boulange. Apparently they were just bought by Starbucks or something and the locals are not happy about it.

And oh, just the Full House houses beyond the park there. NBD. (I may or may not have a dozen hold-out shots on my iPhone of myself with that in the background.)

And the antithesis of our beloved Tanner fam: the iconic Haight-Ashbury intersection.

Apparently, Oregon has had an influence on me - I loved the vibe of this cafe/hotel/hippie hangout/whatever it is and quickly snapped a picture as my friends told me to hurry the heck up.

I got really happy when I spotted Bob in the window...

Another highlight of the trip: Magnolia Pub and Brewery in Haight-Ashbury. I'm the weirdo who wouldn't stop talking about the cloth napkins and oh-so handsome menu. But just look at it! The food and beer were equally impressive.

We are so Portland, ridin' bikes with fanny packs.

This is what awaited us on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge and apparently it's where the sun hangs out. It also smelled like eucalyptus trees - my fave. Now, onward, to Sausalito!

Posin' in front of the hills of Sausalito. (Don't look at my hair. Stop! Jk. But riding a bike in full fog for two hours definitely had me reconsidering the whole short hair thing. I was a mess.)

And to wrap it up, a "candid" shot (we think we're so cute) that is not really candid at all. I'm holding out the camera, isn't it obvious? I can't lie to you!

San Francisco did not disappoint. I had some of the best food of my life, saw both interesting and gorgeous parts of the city, and I got to spend 100 hours straight with the close friends I don't see very often (and somehow we all kept our sanity!). I can't wait to go back, but I think I need to take it down a notch for my next trip and go somewhere that involves hanging out by a body of water and sipping piƱa coladas. At least then I'll be more likely to fit a nap into the schedule!

Have you been to any of these places in San Francisco??

Round Top, Texas

It's that time of year...
Bluebonnets at the family farm in Texas, taken by my cousin Jennifer just a couple of days ago

Today marks the official kick-off of the biggest antiques fair in the United States, and I am SO wishing I was there (with a zero-balance credit card, of course). Twice a year, the open fields around tiny Round Top, Texas (pop. 77) turn into the mecca of antiquing as thousands of dealers and shoppers from all over the United States congregate along country Highway 237 between Austin and Houston to literally shop bargain till they drop.

You know how a lot of families look forward all year to ski vacations, week-long trips to the coast, or cruises in the Caribbean? Well, this is the big event my family has looked forward to every year since I was in middle school. My poor brother! ;) With my mom, sister, grandmother, aunt and cousin alongside me repeating the mantra, "If you love it, get it!" we've come away with quite the collection of interesting things over the years. My personal favorites that I have in my apartment? A 1920s chenille bedspread, a giant gastropod fossil, a vintage Mexican beer tray and a pair of wooden school chairs I have pulled up to my kitchen table.

Two years ago I invited three of my Portland friends to make the trip with me, and before they booked their flights, I warned them: the purpose of this trip is to go antiquing - meaning 8 hour days of roaming fields of what-can-appear-to-be junk, looking for that perfect set of vintage dessert plates or antique coffee grinder. But the tradeoff would be some damn good country barbecue! And to my excitement, they were into it. Troopers!

So, a little reminiscing from Round Top, Spring 2010...

My friends and I in the middle of the shopping day.

My favorite booth (below) - I couldn't stop drooling over the styling.

A family shot!

A little humor

More humor! Obsessed with the vultures.

My sister, aunt and mom trying some candied jalapenos ...  amazing stuff. Seriously.

Those suitcases came back to Portland with me and served as a nightstand for a couple of years.

See, they have guy stuff too! ;)

And I leave you with the best pic of all.... my friend Michelle and I with beloved Blue Bell ice cream cones, and I look like I belong on King of the Hill. Love this photo for that reason.

If you live in Texas, try try try to make it out there this coming weekend or next (it lasts for 10 whole days) and if you don't live in Texas but love flea markets and antiques - put it on your bucket list. You won't be disappointed!

Obsessed: Nikki and Kari's Seattle Apartment

My college friend Nikki and her sister Kari are two women who really do live "the good life" up in Seattle, Washington. Not only do they live stylishly (chocolate croissants for breakfast anyone?), but they work hard and play hard, and by play hard I mean they are always go, go, go, when it comes to doing one fun thing after another. What they're into is usually all over the place and that's what I love about them; during a December visit we went to the Kanye / Jay-Z show one night and drag queen superstar Dina Martina's Christmas show the next. Hello, perfect weekend!

They share an apartment in Seattle's Queen Anne neighborhood, and I'm always so impressed by the way their unique style comes through in their home. Whether it's an assortment of Mexican beer in the fridge, a colorful bouquet picked up from the Fremont Farmers' Market or a newly curated bedroom vignette that shows off one-of-a-kind art and sentimental treasures, they always stay true to themselves and it definitely shows.

Nikki gave me permission to snap these pictures below of their place while I was up there this past weekend. Sorry about the gloomy lighting in the photos, but that's true Seattle for you!

I love their entry / desk area right when you walk inside. It's so functional but still so cute.

I'm totally obsessed with the "cucina" sign above the doorway.

The gold and white deer container is actually a set of super-stylish measuring cups!

A friend decorated their apartment with the papel picado banner as a cheerful reminder of their travels.

Turquoise and white ikat pillows add some "pop" to the neutral couch, and aren't those windows fantastic?

Wall art made by Nikki!

A treasure brought back from Rio de Janeiro

Can't get enough of this colorful vignette in Nikki's bedroom

Loving how personal this space is...

And that's "el final!"
